Aircon Ice Forming in Punggol Flats: A Two-Suspect Problem
Ice inside an aircon in 32-degree Singapore feels impossible, but it's actually one of the cleaner diagnostic signals a unit can give: aircon ice forming means the evaporator coil is getting colder than it's designed to, and only two things realistically cause that — airflow starved by dirt, or refrigerant pressure dropped by a leak. Both are fixable. But first: switch the unit off and let it thaw, because running it iced makes everything worse.
Why a coil freezes
In normal operation, warm room air flowing over the coil keeps its temperature above freezing even while it cools your room. Cut the airflow — choked filters, a grime-matted coil, a failing blower — and the coil sits in still air, its temperature plunges, and the room's moisture freezes onto it. Alternatively, drop the refrigerant pressure via a leak and the coil runs colder than designed even with good airflow. Ice then insulates the coil, cooling collapses, the unit runs harder, more ice forms. It's a feedback loop, which is why icing never fixes itself.
Which suspect is yours? The circumstantial evidence
Point to airflow if: the filters look choked, airflow felt weak for weeks before the ice appeared, or it's been six months plus since any servicing. Point to gas if: the unit was serviced recently and filters are clean, cooling faded despite decent airflow, or you've had top-ups before (a leak history). The technician settles it definitively — visual coil inspection plus a pressure reading at the condenser — in one visit. Guessing wrong on your own and, say, topping up gas when the coil is dirty, wastes money and leaves the loop running.
Why 'switch off now' isn't just caution
An iced coil starves the system, and the compressor — the expensive component in the whole setup — labours against it. Long icing episodes also end with a flood: the sheet melts when the unit stops and can overwhelm the drain tray in minutes, which is how an icing problem becomes a leaking-water problem with wet flooring attached. Thawing takes an hour or two with the unit off; running fan-only mode speeds it up safely, and put a towel down for the meltwater either way.
The fix and the bill
Airflow cause: a $40 general service where filters are the issue, or a $90 chemical wash where the coil itself is coated — most Punggol icing cases end here. Gas cause: top-up from $70 with the exact price confirmed at your condenser first; and if pressure drops again soon after, there's an active leak worth finding via the $50 diagnosis (waived if the repair proceeds) instead of re-icing every few months. Photos of the cleaned coil or the gauge reading come with either path.
Frequently asked questions
Can I just chip the ice off and keep using my aircon?
Please don't chip — coil fins bend and puncture easily, and a punctured coil is a far bigger bill than any cleaning. Switch off, let it melt naturally or with fan mode, towel for the water. And note the underlying cause is still there: it will re-ice until the airflow or gas issue is fixed.
Is ice on the pipes outside the same problem?
Frost on the refrigerant pipes near the condenser points the same two directions, with low gas the stronger suspect. It gets checked the same way — pressure reading at the condenser — as part of any visit you book for the icing.
How much does fixing an icing aircon cost in Punggol?
If it's dirt: $40-90 depending on whether filters or the coil are the blockage. If it's gas: from $70 for the top-up, price confirmed before work. If it's a leak needing repair: $50 diagnosis, waived when you proceed, with a fixed quote first. You'll know which within one visit.
My aircon ices up every few months. Why does it keep coming back?
Recurring ice means the cause was never fixed — either servicing keeps getting skipped so the coil re-clogs, or there's a slow gas leak being patched with top-ups. The pattern itself is diagnostic; tell us the history on WhatsApp and we'll target the visit accordingly.
Iced up? Switch off, let it thaw, and book the diagnosis-in-one-visit at /book or via WhatsApp — coil inspection and gas reading together settle it.
