Aircon Bad Smell? Your Nose Is Running a Diagnostic
A bad smell from the aircon is your most honest sensor at work: air is passing over something it shouldn't, and the type of smell narrows down what. Before booking anything, spend ten seconds classifying it — musty, sour, sewage-ish or burning — because in a Punggol flat each points to a different problem, a different fix, and a very different level of urgency. Musty or damp, like old books: mould on the coil
The most common by far. Mould colonises the perpetually damp coil and blower, and the fan mails you spores every time it starts. Sour, like a gym towel: bacteria in standing water
A sour or vinegary edge usually means bacterial growth — often in a drain tray where water is pooling instead of draining, essentially a petri dish with a fan over it. The fix targets the drainage: tray and line cleared and flushed, plus a chemical wash where the slime has spread to the coil. Sour smells and slow drips frequently arrive together, both symptoms of the same stagnant water. Expect the $40-90 range depending on how far it's spread.
Sewage-like: the drain line is talking
A genuinely foul, drain-like odour suggests the condensate line itself — heavily fouled, or in some cases positioned so smells travel back up it — rather than the unit's coil. It's less common than the first two and worth describing accurately when you book, because the technician will trace the drainage run rather than defaulting to a coil clean. Usually resolved within a servicing visit; stubborn cases get a proper diagnosis rather than repeated deodorising.
Burning, plastic or fishy-electrical: switch off now
This is the one smell that outranks a booking queue. Burning or hot-plastic odours point to electrical trouble — overheating motor, wiring, or component — and the correct response is off at the unit and off at the breaker, then a repair visit, not a cleaning.
